| Out of the embrace of eBay? |

Rather than charging people for every sale, the People's Web (www.thepeoplesweb.com) asks for a flat £5-a-year fee for joining its service. After this, you can buy or sell for nothing.
The company says its service aims to "break the stranglehold of the high-fee auction sites and search engines". Essentially the web site pitches itself as a matchmaker, not a middleman. "We simply provide a community where buyers and sellers can meet and arrange their own transactions," said a spokesman. The idea is catching on fast, apparently, with 80,000 people expected to have joined by the end of this month. Small businesses can also use the service for £25 a year. |
